Step 1  |  Set-up your campaign

  • Create a personal fundraising page on Canada Helps (or on Facebook).
  • Set a goal:  Here are some specific campaigns that you can work towards (click to learn more):

We want to keep the Ugandan mothers and their health care providers safe whilst in hospital.  Your support can provide a team of maternal health providers with a package of protection to limit the spread of COVID-19 during lifesaving maternal procedures.

Help protect a health worker and limit their chance of contracting or spreading COVID-19 and other infections to mothers whilst providing emergency care.

* Items will be purchased and selected by hospital staff in Uganda and will include items such as masks, gloves, plastic aprons, boots, soap, sanitizer based on availability and need.

You can help a mom with an unexpected complication get lifesaving care she needs when she faces an unexpected pregnancy or birth complication.

Sometimes a mother experiences a life threatening complication before, during or after birth that could never have been predicted! You can help two mothers get the medications they need and support by trained health care that will save their lives.

Women in Uganda are facing even more delays than usual in getting access to maternal care at a hospital or health facility. This means that many require surgery to save them and their babies or to prevent them from permanent disability.

Key surgeries/procedures include Cesarean sections, blood transfusions, and fistula repair.

Do you want to help save thousands of mothers lives and give their children a bright future? Support a student to get the knowledge and skills they need to save women and children in their communities in Uganda.

  • Pick an activity: you can do almost anything to fundraise to save a mother. We’ve generated a list of ideas to help you. Click on the items below to learn more.

If you have a birthday coming up, instead of gifts ask for donations toward your campaign.

At-home dance-a-thon, craft-a-thon, knit-a-thon, art-a-thon, basketball dribble-a-thon etc.

  • Choose a day to hold your ‘thon’.
  • Accept pledges toward your ‘thon’ in one of two ways:
    • Indicate your ‘hourly rate’ to your friends and family (e.g. for every $50 raised, I will dance for 1 hour)
    • OR 2. Choose a set time and ask your friends before, and during the event for donations (e.g. I will knit for 12 hours straight, will you donate $5 for every hour I plan to knit).
    • For both versions, it’s fun if you can give live updates via zoom, skype, social media and email
Let your friends and family know that if you meet your target fundraising goal you will shave your head, your beard. If you can, film yourself shaving your head and share it with your supporters.

Traditionally, our Walk to Save a Mother is 5 km long. The average number of steps to complete a 5km walk is about 6500. Invite your friends and family to support your self-isolated 5 km. Your route might be from your basement to your bedroom! Or your laps around your backyard. Track your steps using a step counter, fitness watch or a phone (most smartphones have a built-in step counter).

Help your child to reach out to adults in their life to ask them to pledge a dollar amount per book read. Set a time period, and then at the end of the period, the child will let their pledgers know how many books they read and the pledger will donate accordingly (e.g. Grandma pledged $5 per book and Ava read 10 books through the month of May, therefore Grandma donates $50)

During this time of self isolation giving up a simple joy, such as dessert, coffee, or a favourite snack is a big commitment. Ask your friends to make a pledge for each day you are able to abstain from your favourite item up to a maximum number of days.

Write a heartfelt email to your friends and family letting them know that you want to help mothers in East Africa, but that the Walk you usually participate in is cancelled due to COVID-19. Invite them to be game changers for women in need.

If you are artistically inclined, arrange your own virtual gala concert via zoom or facebook live. Invite your friends and family to donate instead of paying a ticket price. You could also read your favourite book. This can give joy to your friends and family while helping women in need.

Step 2  |  Start Saving Mothers

  • Spread the word: let family and friends know what about your campaign. Let them know that mothers in East Africa die needlessly every day– and it could be prevented. Tell them why caring for these vulnerable women and babies is so important to you. Ask them to contribute to your goal:
    – Send an email
    – Share about it on Facebook or another social media
    – Call your friends and family
  • Follow Up: Remind your friends and family about your campaign
  • Take Action to save a mother, whether you chose to count steps, read books, cut your hair etc., make sure you do the activity you follow-through on your plan
  • Share: Take photos or videos of your amazing love in action and share them with Save the Mothers, and your supporters!

Step 3  |  Check Your Impact

As your friends and family contribute to your efforts, the fundraising thermometer will rise. Covid-19 will impact the most vulnerable around the world in the most tragic ways. Your efforts will help so many women to continue to receive the care they need as life becomes more precarious for many. You are making a big difference.

Once your campaign is done, let your friends and family know how much you were able to raise, and how your activity went via email, facebook etc.

Together, let’s raise $50,000 by June 30.
